Difference Between Architects and Civil Engineers

Architects and Civil Engineers complete some of the same tasks such as planning and designing structures, though many of their responsibilities differ. Civil Engineers focus on how things will be built and the structure of a building, while architects ensure the design is aesthetically appealing.

An architect is basically a professional who is concerned with the facial beauty of the structure. That includes designing the facade of the building, the interior decoration, the landscaping, the gargoyles, and pediments etc. put on a building. In case of bridges, how the bridge would look falls under the role of an architect. Civil Engineers on the other hand have a more vivid role. A Civil Engineer can work in the capacity of a Consultant/ Structural Engineer, designing the whole structure so that it stays in the air not failing and eventually falling. That requires them to be very good in Engineering calculations. They can work as Site Engineers, which would require them to oversee the whole work going on the site. They can work as Planners/Schedulers. That typically requires you to have a working knowledge of Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project along with an ability to perform basic mathematics to calculate the quantity take-off of excavation, back-filling, brickwork etc. Civil Engineers can work as a Surveyor, which would involve you calculating the area of the land or the level of land with respect to Mean Sea Level or other benchmarks set up by PWD. There is work in the Quality Control, that checks the strength of Concrete, the consistency of cement, fineness of Sands etc.

Architect

Architects design various buildings and structures that include office buildings and houses. They can work on projects as small as rooms in a building to designing the entire building. They must have experience with computer software to create scaled drawings to provide plans to workers. Architects must have great creativity and vision to ensure the project looks attractive to clients. They are also responsible for taking care of many parts of the project, so they must be very organized to keep track of all aspects of the architectural development. Architects with extensive experience can advance into higher-level supervisory roles as Architectural managers.

Job responsibilities of an Architect include:

1- Organizing structure specifications.

2- Estimating budget and time.

3- Creating drawings and plans.

4- Presenting plans to clients.

5- Developing contracts

Civil Engineer

Civil Engineers are responsible for overseeing and designing roads, bridges, water systems, buildings, and dams, among other structures. Civil Engineers spend the majority of their time in an office designing and planning projects, though they do visit construction sites to oversee the work being completed. Civil Engineers work with complicated designs where a background in math, as well as skills in problem-solving, can aid in finding solutions to issues that may arise with the development of projects.

Career that can also be choosed

Individuals interested in becoming an Architect may also find a career as a graphic designer interesting. As a graphic designer, they design for promotional purposes on paper or websites rather than designing whole buildings.

A career as a construction operator may be another option for those interested in Civil Engineering. A construction operator works with the machinery used on construction projects that Civil Engineers design.

Civil Engineers and Architects may sometimes overlap each other’s work but a good relationship between the two professions will make the construction job more effective and successful.
